Opportunities for public and private investments are in the education node, Ibika, 4km from the town centre.
The opportunities here include the development of a student village, a development that will bring together the Walter Sisulu University and the Further Education & Training campus. This can occur through rehabilitation or conversion of factory areas for student accommodation, a mini-retail facility to support the day-to-day need of students and staff (e.g stationery shop, salon, pub, bakery etc.) and other youth development options.
Further investment opportunities exist in the proposed Msobomvu precinct with the aim to initiate retail and business services to people closer to their place of residence; thus reducing some of the pressure on the main CBD. The Msobomvu centre is ideally located to service a large segment of the Butterworth community
Lastly, development of a tourism and leisure area at the Gcuwa dam area will include protected swimming areas, braai facilities, public toilets, a parking area, and building of snack shop and water sport rental facility. An opportunity also exists for the construction of a function room for hire for weddings, parties and conferences. This will be supported by visible urban landscaping elements, trees and street furniture.
