The Hamburg Artists' Retreat is a catalytic project set to anchor the regeneration of Hamburg as a niche tourism destination centred on art and the development of local artists. An artists' retreat is a resort equipped with accommodation, studios and facilities for artists.

The Hamburg Artists Retreat will offer a multidisciplinary residency programme, thus it will provide facilities for all genres of art. To begin with, the focus will be on music production and performance, theatre, dance and crafts. There will also be the provision of artist lofts to cater for the more quiet arts, such as writing and painting.

The vision is to create a space for both local and international artists to develop their craft in a unique and special environment. Retreat periods will be defined, along with the creation of linkages to other arts festivals (for example the Grahamstown National Arts Festival), public exhibitions, and workshops for artists and school children. A partnership strategy with strategic stakeholders like BASA, SABC, academic, research and funding institutions and enterprises is being developed to sustain the residence. These include the establishment of an endowment fund, scholarship / bursary sponsors to ensure residencies for artists, and the establishment of an Artists' Ambassadorial Network etc.

The facility will also offer Arts training courses, programmes for school children who wish to develop in the Arts, and accommodation / conference facilities for tourists who wish to enjoy the natural beauty and culture of the area.

The site for the residency was chosen as part of the development of a spatial development framework for the whole town. The site is on a north-facing brow of a hill overlooking the river and estuary and slightly shielded from the prevailing winds from the sea. Its location has been strategically chosen to promote further development around it and around developing Hamburg as an Arts town.
